Albert Smith Signs have had the privilege to work in partnership with local sculptural artist Daniel Templeman since 2004 and together we have delivered many large-scale public art works throughout Australia including Confluence- Brisbane, Witness Box- Sydney, Volume – Brisbane, Collective- Brisbane, Missing Corners- North Sydney, Four Rings – Yarrabilba and now the Eight Rings on the M5 Sydney.
“Eight Rings is conceived of as two identical sets of four rings ‘cut’ from two identical cylinders. The two sets of rings appear to rest against each-other and on the ground. By ‘turning’ the rings away from each other a complex dynamic emerges in which foreground and background merge and separate in a jumble of seemingly disparate arcs. This complex and scrambled form is quickly untangled when the viewer moves to apprehend the singularity of each set of rings.” Daniel Templeman
The Eight Rings urban art installation are 3000mm in diameter, spanning 7,146mm long and fabricated from 3mm thick aluminium – A material suited for the outdoor elements based on its strength and durability.
Each set of rings are five welded sections with aluminium sheets used due to the size of the design and were cut to size and shaped on our CAD machine.
Once each set was constructed, they were then painted with Y26 Homebush Gold Dulux Durebild Undercoat and Duration top coat.
Each four set of rings was transported on individual trucks, where they were then crane lifted and set in place with 6000mm x 1000mm pad footings and connected at three touch points through the centre of the rings.
Working in the Public Arts sector allows us to manufacture with a variety of designs, materials and each with their unique challenges.
We deliver creative and practical design solutions regardless of scale and materials, achieving a successful outcome for the artist and the community.
